Police in Florida claim that an eight-year-old boy shot and killed a newborn while also hurting the infant’s younger sibling.
The event took place as the child was playing with his father’s gun.
The incident occurred in a Florida motel where the boy’s father, Randall, and his girlfriend were meeting up. Tragedies like these are all too often in a country like US where weapons are widely available.
Notably, Randall was not allowed to purchase a gun due to his criminal police record. His girlfriend was with her two-year-old twins and one-year-old daughter, and his son was with him.
Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons said Randall left his gun “in the closet” and went outdoors. Knowing where it was, the boy pulled it out and started playing with the gun as the mother of the infant girl slept off.
“He pulls the gun from the holster, starts playing with it….fires a round into the one-year-old toddler,” Sheriff stated.
According to the police, the father, 45-year-old Roderick Randall, was detained for culpable negligence, unlawful possession of a handgun, and evidence concealment.
The infant’s death is the most recent in a string of comparable events.
