All villages to be connected with optical fibre in the next 1,000 days: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the nation on 74th Independence Day, on Saturday said that every village of the country will be connected with optical fibre in the next 1,000 days.

Addressing the nation from the Red Fort on Independence Day, he pointed out that only five dozen panchayats in the country were connected with optical fibre cable before 2014.

“In the last five years, 1.5 lakh village panchayats have been connected with optical fibre. In the coming 1,000 days, every village of the nation will be connected with optical fibre,” PM Modi said Lakshadweep would be also connected with submarine optical fibre cable.

The PM said the country is witnessing the expansion of roads and the internet at phenomenal and rapid speed, from the peaks of the Himalayas to islands in the Indian Ocean.

Referring to digital India, PM said the importance of the mission has been realized during the COVID-19 pandemic, as during the lockdown period digital transactions witnessed a huge surge.
