#ArrestLeenaManimekalai, netizens call for filmmaker’s arrest after Kaali movie poster shows goddess Kaali smoking

The documentary’s poster, which shows the Hindu goddess Kaali smoking a cigarette, has angered everyone on social media. Many people want the filmmaker to be taken into custody.

The controversy’s focal point, the documentary movie Kaali, is becoming extremely popular for all the wrong reasons. The movie’s poster insults the Hindu deity and offends religious sensibilities.

The hashtag #ArrestLeenaManimekalai started to trend on Twitter as users called for its creator Leena Manimekalai to be arrested.

Leena Manimekalai published the movie’s poster on social media, sparking the uproar. Goddess Kaali is shown in the poster. In the poster, she can be seen lighting up a cigarette. The actress portraying the goddess is shown holding the pride flag for the LGBTQ+ community in addition to her customary trishul (trident) and sickle.

Social media users urged the Aga Khan Museum, where the movie’s premiere took place, to immediately take it down.

People claimed it to be offensive to religious beliefs and profane. Some urged the PMO and Home Minister Amit Shah to intervene.

Reacting to the controversial poster, a user wrote, “This is deliberately hurting the sentiments of Hindu devotees. Freedom of speech doesn’t mean— that one can cross the line and show anything in the garb of creativity. How can this be allowed to even release on digital platforms? Kindly take a note.”
