Things you should know about Biden’s running mate Kamala Harris

Kamala Harris is seeking to become the first female vice president of the United States of America. Harris made history in 2016 when she became the first woman of color to be elected to the US Senate from California.

This Tuesday, Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential candidate announced Senator Kamala Harris as his choice for vice president, making her the first Black woman and the first Asian American to compete on a major party’s presidential ticket in the United States.

She might be Biden’s significant pick for many reasons, including the fact that she could potentially be the next US President, since 77-year-Biden is expected to serve only a single term if elected, therefore Harris would be favored to win the Democratic presidential nomination four years from now.

Kamala is the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India and is a former California state attorney general who became popular with liberal activists after her tough questioning of officials from the administration of President Donald Trump.

She is proud of her strong Indian roots & gives the credit of her success to her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, who was born in Chennai & immigrated to the US to attend a doctoral program at UC Berkeley. Also, in an interview, Harris mentioned that her grandfather was, in fact, one of the original Independence fighters in India, and she recalled some of her memories from childhood were walking along the beach with him after he retired and lived in Besant Nagar in Chennai, on a trip down the memory lane.

Kamala Harris has many people rooting for her because of her excellent work as a Senate by introducing a bill to give lower-income families cash payments and tax credits to help battle wage stagnation and rising housing costs, along with being a strong advocate of criminal justice reforms. Like a trailblazer that she is, it would be a marvel to witness her winning this race as the first female vice president of the United States of America.
