The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a case against Cambridge Analytica and Global Science Research Ltd for “illegal harvesting of personal data from Facebook users in India,” as per officials said.

The initial enquiry on the case against Cambridge Analytica and Global Science Research Ltd has begun for allegedly acquiring data of Indians against facebook. As per the allegations, Global Science Research Ltd has been appointed to serve Cambridge Analytica through illegal means by acquiring personal data of Indians using facebook.

Facebook has said that the personal data of 87 million people mostly in US might have been shared to Cambridge Analytica. After data breach news landed in India, the IT Ministry had issued a letter to Facebook and Cambridge Analytica in 2018 seeking clarification on the personal data harvesting by both the countries.

Ministry’s move has come after the Christopher Wylie, who has exposed the scam involving mining of facebook user data to manipulate polls through Twitter. He tweeted details that claims to expose the British consultancy’s work in India dating back to 2003.
