COVID19: A boon for change in the Education System

At present, the world is panicked over the corona pandemic.

The daily life of the public has been disturbed a lot. Transportation, traveling, industries, business, education everything has been affected by the pandemic. People are afraid of going out of their houses, and keeping a safe distance from others even if they go out.

In the present situation, the government is emphasizing on digitalization of the system and maximum use of digital technology so that people go out from their house to minimum and social distance is maintained.

In the field of education also the government has ordered the closure of all schools & colleges and all examinations have been canceled.

However, to help students to learn from home, government and education institutions have taken several steps using modern technology. One of them is distance education through video and video conferencing

Nowadays digital technology is very advance and peoples, especially students, are very smart in using this. They are learning from home through video conferencing on zoom, meet, etc… They are following lectures on YouTube. They are taking maximum advantage of the internet for learning. There are many sites for specialized lectures on different subjects.

For primary and secondary education there are so many programs available, paid as well as free. Schools and colleges are now running online classes regularly. For lower classes normally two to three periods of 30 min each is organized.

For Std 4 to 7 three to four lectures are held almost for three hours where even 50 or more students can join at a time through video conferencing by which students have a chance of interaction also. Otherwise, students can learn from videos on YouTube or through different apps.

With the experience of the last three months, I suppose we can do a lot of changes in our present education system We should use the maximum of the technology available.

Up to std 8, I suppose the present schooling system should continue because small children should go to school regularly where they get social environment and physical contact with other children.

In Class 8 the students should be given thorough knowledge of computer and digital technology.

From std 9 onwards there should be no formal schooling. only distance learning should be available. Students can join any online class of their choice. The education board – state or central- should only prescribe the syllabus for stud. This system will give students flexibility in time. they can open their apps or YouTube at any convenient time and learn. For interaction and doubt clearing there may be fixed sessions on a fixed time. Or there may be call center facilities.

The Board can conduct regular tests and examinations online. Even if a student does not appear in the regular tests he should be allowed to appear in the final examination for promotion.

After 12th only Science, Medical, engineering subjects should be taught on campus where more practicals are involved otherwise theory subjects like arts, commerce, law, etc… Should be taught online only

The digital education has many benefits in terms of finance also

  1. No massive investment required for the development of infrastructure like building etc..
  2. Less requirement manpower saving a lot of money in terms of salary.
  3. Lots of saving in transportation cost as students don’t have to come to school

The present schools may be converted to hobby centers where students can learn any art of their choice and play sports of their liking.

Since there will be no fixed time classes students can learn at their convenient time and mood. This will give them enough time to devote to their hobby and learn new things. They can also have part-time jobs, and businesses to earn and support their family.

If this system of digital education is followed throughout India it will benefit students from remote areas, villages, and hilly areas very much. Students will get the best education at their place and they will not have to travel to big cities for a good education. This will save them a lot of money and time. It will also help in bridging the gap between poor and rich

The only thing we require for all this is an internet facility and a laptop with a student.

Internet facilities are nowadays available almost everywhere in the country. if not efforts should be taken for that. A laptop may be provided by the government free of cost or at a nominal cost to the needy a student. It will cost only a small fraction of the budget for education.

The System will break the geographical boundaries also. The son of labor from Orissa living in Surat may join the Orissa board and continue to stay in surat and continue his education. He is not forced to join English or Gujarati school in the absence of Oriya school in surat. Similarly, a family from Bengal living in Delhi may provide their children education in Bengali if they wish so by joining Bengal board.

Looking forward to a next-generation education.
