FASTag Mandatory From January 1: From How it Works to Who is Exempted From Use, Know All

The Ministry of Road and Highway Transport (MoRTH) has declared that FASTag would become mandatory for all vehicles from 1 January 2021 onwards. The change would help to prevent cash purchases at the toll plaza as one will not be needed to stop the car for payment as the transaction will be made digitally with this method. What is FASTag?

FASTag is an automated toll collection device that removes the need to connect with someone else in the toll plaza and pay cash. FASTag is a sticker that should be on the car’s windshield as of January 1, 2021. This tag includes a handwritten Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) barcode, which is connected to the registration information of your car.

What is the validity and price of FASTtag?

The cost of the FASTag is different for each type of vehicle. As per the official website, the FASTag will cost you Rs 200, which is a one-time fee. There is also a refund charge of Rs 100 and a refundable security deposit of Rs 200.

The amount may also vary depending on the bank you are selecting as every bank may have their own policies regarding issuance fees and security deposits

How to apply for FASTag online?

Users can purchase FASTag from a bank branch or POS set up by a bank. The list of banks currently funding FASTags includes HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Kotak Bank, Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda and State Bank of India. If you have FASTag with a bank account, you would just need to enter the details of your car to enable the Sticker.

You should update My FASTag app on your smartphone to do this. Users also have the option to purchase FASTag from Amazon, PayTM, Google Pay or Airtel Payment App. You can even have it shipped to your home with the help of these providers.

The FASTag is also being issued at the NHAI’s points of sale at all toll plazas, and Road Transport Authority (RTA) offices. One can apply for FASTtag online too.

What all do I need to register for FASTag?

You need the following papers to register in a bank. These include the KYC paper, the Registration Certificate (RC) of your vehicle, the passport-sized photograph, the Pan Card and the address and ID evidence. A legal license for address and ID evidence may also be requested. If you are already a client, you only need a copy of the RC.

How to check FASTag balance online?

To check your FASTag balance, you need to visit the website of your issuing agency/bank/mobile wallet. Then log in to the FASTag portal on the website with your login details to see your balance data.

How to know if and how much toll has been debited?

As per the official website, users will receive an SMS with the appropriate information to their registered mobile number as soon as the toll transaction takes place. “Periodic account statements may also be obtained on the website of the Issuer Agency after registration by the customer.” Customer service can also be required if the wrong amount is deducted.
