An infamous gangster attempted to join the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Tamil Nadu unit at an event in Chennai’s Vandalur area, but disappeared after seeing the police. Surya, accused of over 50 criminal cases, was going to join the saffron party in the presence of state chief L Murugan.
The Chengalpattu district police got a tip that Surya will be visiting the event and rushed to the spot. However, the gangster left in a car after he saw them in the crowd. The police arrested six others with knives, and an investigation has been initiated to find out if they are related to Surya.
Upon being interrogated regarding a gangster joining their party, Raghavan said it was challenging to vet everybody’s credentials as hundreds of people were joining the BJP regularly. “None of these persons have joined separately,” he said. “When there is an influx of members, one or two cases end up like this. We are being cautious about this,” he added.
The police informed that numerous cases, including murder, attempt to murder and use of explosives, were filed against Surya. Gangsters Kalvettu Ravi, connected to more than 36 criminal cases (six of which are murders) and another man identified as Sathyaraj also joined BJP.
