Maharashtra: Muslim mob attacks man with sharp weapons for supporting Nupur Sharma; 4 arrested

A 23-year-old man was severely hurt after he was beaten with sharp objects by a mob in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district after the mob accused him of supporting Nupur Sharma of the Bharatiya Janata Party on social media, according to police. In relation to the August 4 incident, four key offenders have been detained.

According to a senior officer, since the inquiry is still in its early stages, it is premature to speculate on the attack’s motivation. According to a police officer, the guy, known as Pratik alias Sunny Rajendra Pawar, was hospitalised in the intensive care unit (ICU) due to damage to his head and other body parts.

On Thursday night, 222 kilometres from the administrative centre of the Ahmednagar district, Pawar was assaulted by at least 14 members of the Muslim community with a sword, sickle, clubs, and hockey sticks in front of a pharmacy at Akkabai Chowk in Karjat town. According to the official, the incident happened when Pawar and Amit Mane, the case’s complainant, were waiting for a buddy near the medical store as Pawar was riding his two-wheeler to an event.

They were waiting for a buddy when a group of Muslim males riding two-wheelers rode up to them. According to the First Information Report, they were carrying hockey sticks, a sword, and a sickle (FIR). In his complaint, Mane said that one of them yelled at Pawar and beat him, accusing him of writing a social media post in support of Nupur Sharma and posting a status against Kanhaiya Lal.

It is premature, according to a senior police official, to connect the attack to Pawar’s social media posts, if any.

“Though there is a mention of Pawar’s social media post in support of Nupur Sharma (in the complaint), it is very premature to speak about it as the probe is on,” he said.

He said Pawar had a criminal history and that there are two active cases against him. Pawar has already been expelled for his illegal behaviour.

“During the investigation so far, we did not come across Pawar’s social media post supporting Nupur Sharma. We are examining all his social media accounts including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp,” Added a different police official. He said the victim had a history of animosity with some of the group’s members, which may have led to the attack.

Four of the main accused persons were taken into custody after a FIR was filed against 14 people under sections 504 of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities Act) and 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which deals with intentionally insulting someone with the intent to cause a breach of the peace. Additional charges include rioting, being a member of an unlawful assembly, and intentionally causing harm.

According to BJP MLA Nitesh Rane, who condemned the event, Pawar was confronted by 10 to 15 men from the Muslim community who demanded to know why he was maintaining Nupur Sharma’s photo as his desktop wallpaper and encouraging others to do the same.
