Maharashtra: Uddhav Cabinet approves renaming Aurangabad to Sambhaji Nagar, Osmanabad to Dharashiv

The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) Cabinet led by Uddhav Thackeray approved the renaming of Aurangabad city as Sambhaji Nagar and Osmanabad as Dharashiv on Wednesday. The renaming of Navi Mumbai International Airport to DB Patil International Airport was another decision made by the Cabinet. Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray, along with other ministers including Aaditya Thackeray, held the Cabinet meeting at Mantrayala in Mumbai.

Congress ministers pushed for the renaming of Pune City to Jijau Nagar during the Maharashtra state cabinet meeting. The suggestion was rejected, though.

It should be mentioned that on May 8, 1988, late Shiv Sena leader Balasaheb Thackeray stated that Aurangabad will henceforth be known as Sambhaji Nagar in honour of Sambhaji.

Sambhaji, the son of Shivaji, was murdered by Aurangzeb.

NCP leader Majeed Memon reacted to the Maharashtra Cabinet’s decision to rename Aurangabad and Osmanabad by claiming that if the Congress and NCP weren’t pleased with this, a joint cabinet decision wouldn’t have been made.

The coalition MVA government in Maharashtra is led by a partnership of the Shiv Sena, Congress, and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
