Muslims are being Targeted in UP: Mayawati

On Friday, BSP leader Mayawati claimed that Muslims, other than Brahmins and Dalits, are being persecuted in Uttar Pradesh under the BJP administration. She also condemned cases including the vandalization of B R Ambedkar’s sculptures in the state and urged the government to intervene promptly.

Her statements came as a result of a recent incident in the eastern Uttar Pradesh district of Jaunpur where villagers protested after an Ambedkar statue installed on a Gram Sabha plot allegedly vanished.

She said such events occurred now as they occurred during the previous Samajwadi Party (SP) administration “Like Brahmins and Dalits were harassed then, similar things are being done during the present BJP government… Muslims are also being harassed,” Mayawati tweeted.

She believed members of such groups were “framed in the wrong ways.” She added that statues of Ambedkar and other symbols had been destroyed under SP regulation.

“Similarly, during the present BJP government, statues of Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar are being damaged. It happened in Varanasi and now in Jaunpur, which is condemnable…” she tweeted.

In the meantime, the Jaunpur administration said the incident was a row-over-land fallout and said the perpetrator, who reportedly stolen the statue, was arrested and the Ambedkar statue recovered.
