With full manufacturing being done by Private Sector and successful test firings by the army, single-source dependence on Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) will become a thing of the past. This will be a major boost to MAKE IN INDIA move.
In Pokharan on Wednesday the Pinaka rockets were tested at a firing range and achieved the desired results by hitting targets accurately. In a technology transfer agreement with Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) the Private Sector manufactured the rockets.
According to the sources, the Pinaka rockets have been test-fired as a part of final developmental trials. Being the first ammunition of it’s kind and developed by the Private Sector in India, Economic Explosives Ltd.
It’s also a success story for DRDO who has been engaging with the Private Sector for the transfer of technology to developed systems.
Pinaka technology was transferred 5 years ago as part of the Make in India move and a push to Private Sectors in Defence Manufacturing, with the decision to split orders evenly with OFB. The Pinaka is a home developed multi-barrel rocket launcher system that is already in service with the Indian Army.
Additional two Pinaka regiments have been under procession since 2017 and would be developed by L&T and TATA Aerospace and Defence for an estimate of 4,500 Cr.
DRDO has successfully tested an extended range of Pinaka rocket that hits a target at a distance of 75Kms, a significant rise from the current range of 40Kms.
