Unlock 4.0 : Why Delhi Metro service should be resumed?

New Delhi: From past 6 months metro services were suspended due to ongoing novel ‘coronavirus’. The ‘unlock 1’ resumed from June 1 with some guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs(MHA). The unlock process began with the resumption of offices and industrial resumption.

In the ‘Unlock 4’, the government may resume with Delhi metro services from 1 September. But school and colleges might not open anytime soon, officials said.

Metro is the lifeline of Delhi as nearly six million people travel daily. The officials said ‘ the metro will follow social distancing norms, there would be increase at stoppage time, there would be contact-less ticketing system through metro cards.’

Another official said,’ Further decisions will be taken by state government how to run Metro trains and their timings. The final decision will rest upon the concerned government.’

‘Bars too might be allowed to open. But the counter sale of alcohol would be prohibited while take away services will be allowed’, the officials said.

Till now prohibited activities are Gym, swimming pool, metro rail services auditoriums, theater, bars, assembly halls. And none of them seems to open soon in the following month.

Reasons to resume Delhi Metro:

  1. Not only for people metro is important but its more important for Delhi Metro Rail Cooperation (DMRC) itself. DMRC is facing an issue of paying off the loan to Japan International Cooperation Agency because the metro has been closed from the past 5 months due to COVID.
  2. Delhi Metro official said ‘ Metro is all set to start, but the government is hesitating to start the metro because there might be increase in traveling of passengers. Offices might increase their staff and people will go out on weekends.

All the discussion and debates are in the process about the loan process but when and how it will be paid is still unknown.
