World Suicide Prevention Day 2020: To Raise Awareness About Suicidal Behaviour

According to recent statistics released by World Health Organization (WHO) about 8,00,000 people every year in the world commits suicide and fact even more worse and worrying that 17% among them were Indians.

Ending life would be a second of work but requires a whole lot of courage and a reasonable sometimes unreasonable circumstances behind committing suicide. World Suicide Prevention Day 2020 is to prevent people from committing suicide by spreading awareness among them.

Here are the list of people who unfortunately  decided to end their lives:

Jiah Khan

Bollywood starlet Jiah Khan allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her home. The actress who made her daring debut in the movie Nishabd was found dead by her mother and sister. Fingers were pointed towards her boyfriend and actor Aditya Pancholi’s son Suraj for her depression and consequent demise and in the next few weeks the sordid details of their dysfunctional relationship came to light.

  • Silk Smitha

    South siren Silk Smitha was found dead on a September morning near Chennai, hanging by a rope in her bedroom. In her suicide note, she attributed this decision to devastating failures in life. Bollywood blockbuster The Dirty Picture was loosely based on her life.

  • Guru Dutt

    One such example is actor and filmmaker Guru Dutt’s death due to a fatal combination of sleeping pills and excessive alcohol. This tragedy is still a topic of ‘suicide or accident’ debate. It was no secret at the time that Guru Dutt was not on good terms with his wife Geeta Dutt, and was in love with co-star Waheeda Rehman who had also distanced herself from him. It would be no surprise if he was indeed suicidally depressed that day.

    Kuljeet Randhawa’s friend and co-star, model and former Miss India Nafisa Joseph had hanged herself a couple of years earlier to her own death. Nafisa who was a VJ and had just learned that her fiancé Gautam Khanduja was already married and had broken the engagement.

  • Parveen Babi

    Actress and glamour icon Parveen Babi was found dead in her apartment in 2005. The reclusive star. who was allegedly suffering from mental illness and blood sugar issues, had apparently starved herself to death.

  • Every hour one student commits suicide in India is a bitter truth of this country.  About 28 such suicides reported every day, as per data compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The NCRB data shows that 10,159 students died by suicide in 2018, an increase from 9,905 in 2017, and 9,478 in 2016.
  • Maharashtra with the highest number of student suicides in 2018 with 1,448. With almost 4 suicides every day which is deliberately followed by Tamil Nadu with 953 and Madhya Pradesh with 862.
  • Between 1999 and 2003, 27,990 students ended their lives; 28,913 between 2004 and 2008; and 36,913 between 2009 and 2013. The 2014-18 period saw a 26% jump from the preceding 5-year period to 46,554.
  • According to the reports of MHRD, “27 students across 10 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) committed suicide between 2014 and 2019. IIT Madras tops the list, with seven students losing their lives during this period.”
  • According to a 2012 Lancet report, suicide rates in India are highest in the 15-29 age group — the youth population. The report says that among men, 40% suicides were by individuals aged 15-29, while for women it was almost 60%.

Ending life cannot be put in negligence because every life is important in regards. World Suicide Prevention Day 2020 is celebrated to prevent suicide over the world.
